Information for New Parents

Welcome to Troop 19!
We hope this reference information will help guide you in becoming an active parent/scout team in our troop. This information will change slightly from time to time, so if you have questions please contact any of the people listed below for more information.

Troop 19 “Best You’ve Seen” is an active outdoor troop that meets weekly on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:15. September through May we meet at the First United Methodist Church located on School Street in Normal. During the summer months, approximately June through August, we meet at Underwood Park. Parent Committee meetings are the first Monday of each month during the same hours. All parents are members of the Parent Committee and are encouraged to offer their time and talents to the group’s success. Camping outings are generally about once per month.

To keep track of what is happening in the busy organization you have many options. The troop maintains a website with current events, photographs of outings, and periodic newsletters. Access this site at: http://www.troop19.com. The Web site provides information including what to bring on a campout, when the next outings are, rank advancement, live links to other scouting web sites, and fundraiser information. The electronic newsletter is also sent from our scout server. If you are interested in receiving the newsletter and other communications by email just provide your email address to the Scoutmaster.

Uniforms are an important part of our troop presentation in the community. Class A uniforms are required whenever we travel and during fall, winter and spring meetings. Your scout will need to know the requirements for the Class A Uniform found on page 566-67 in the Boy Scout Handbook. The only exceptions are the hat, and a neckerchief provided by the troop. Class B Uniforms consist of scout t-shirts and are acceptable during the summer month meetings and when so indicated by the Scoutmaster. The troop tries to maintain a supply of used uniforms at the church. Contact your Scoutmaster for access to these items.

The troop treasurer keeps Individual Scout Accounts. Your Scout’s account will be assessed monthly dues of $15 in addition to fees for outings participated in. These dues cover the van fund, badges, equipment maintenance, and new uniform accessories. The subsidizing of some more expensive events is also included. Participation in fundraisers is credited to each individual account. Any expenses incurred by scouts or parents on behalf of the troop can also be submitted for credit to the scout’s account. These account sheets will be available to each Scout at each parent meeting, however it is the responsibility of each Scout to regularly request a balance and to be sure their account is in good standing at all times.

The patrol method of Troop Leadership starts with an elected the SPL (senior patrol leader) and his appointed ASPL's (assistant senior patrol leader). The SPL is in charge of planning and conducting all meetings. This scout also is the leader second to the adults on any campouts. The ASPLs assist in planning and conducting meetings when needed. These two positions supervise and mentor individual patrols. Troop leaders also include a Quartermaster (responsible for maintaining and ordering equipment), a Scribe (who keeps notes of decisions and performs other responsibilities), and may include other appointed officers The patrol leader is in charge of his patrol and has an assistant. Both the patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders assist each patrol to work as a team. They are also required to attend Patrol Leader Councils where they can voice the needs and concerns of their patrol. The patrol quartermaster is in charge of making sure that the patrol has the equipment it needs before the campout and restocking the cook box after a camp out. He is also responsible for organizing the food for the campout. Quartermasters do not necessarily buy the food, but make sure it gets assigned within the patrol.

Campouts are signed up for and planned for at the meeting prior to the outing. Each patrol leader is responsible for acquiring food and supplies for the outing, unless otherwise specified. Some meals are troop meals. Supplies can be obtained from the shed at the church, from parent donations, or purchased with reimbursement through the Second Adult on the trip. . A fee of about $15-$20 per outing will be charged to each participating Scout’s account to help cover gas, camp fees, and food. Please notify the Assistant Scoutmaster or Second Adult responsible for the outing of a cancellation at least 24 hours prior to departure. Failure to do so will result in a charge of half the cost of the outing to be charged to your scout’s account. For a list of supplies to bring on a camp out, see the troop website above.

Venture Crew is a scouting option for young men and women ages 14 to 20. Venture Crew 19 includes challenging high-adventure activities, sports, and hobbies for teenagers that teach them leadership skills, provide opportunities to teach others, and give them an opportunity to learn and grow. Many, but not all, of the members of the Venture Crew also belong to Troop 19. Other members are teenage youth from high schools and the local colleges. If young women attend a campout, an adult female advisor is present. Occasionally the Crew will join Troop 19 on events and will teach scout skills, but usually the venturing activities will be designed separately for older teenagers. Some of the activities include multi-night backpack outings, canoeing, climbing, living history, and leave-no-trace camping. Members of the Venture Crew aspire to the Bronze, Gold, and Silver awards.
