A Dark Day for Troop 19

by Steve Ullom

We visited the Gus Grissom memorial in Spring Mill State Park in Indiana. We were able to touch a Gemini space module that Gussom actually piloted! We were also able to marvel at how miniscule the module was, and see a 1960’s era spacesuit up close. After that, we hiked a short trail along a river and explored the opening of Donaldson Cave, discovering an old cave-in, as well as a small opening which overlooked the trail we hiked. The cave has a gorgeous entrance where water gushes out from a 15 foot tall, 3 foot wide crevice causing a 10 foot wide, 2 foot deep river. (Gerry has it all on his palm pilot.)

Then we made our way to Blue Springs...8 scouts, 4 adults, 70 other loud people. We did the boat ride, crawled on our belly through the mud to see a small waterfall (poetic license here), Gordie found out why you want to have a backup light source besides the person in front of you, saw a demonstration of how to climb ropes without climbing the rope ala gym class, saw blind frogs, a crayfish, and a white fish, as well as 2 inch bats 2 feet from our walking path. We also found out that God makes lumpy beds, and sharing all your cough drops with the coughing kid 5 feet from you is better than not sleeping.
